FAQs
About flower essences
-
Flower essences are liquid preparations made from the flowering parts of wild plants, trees and bushes. They are taken internally as drops (on the tongue or diluted in water) and work not on the physical body directly, but on the emotional and energetic patterns that so often sit underneath our physical and mental states.
They are not aromatherapy and have no scent. They are not herbal tinctures. They are what is known as vibrational medicine: subtle, gentle, and deeply respectful of the whole person.
-
The foundation of flower essence therapy was laid in the 1930s by Dr. Edward Bach, a British physician and bacteriologist who believed that emotional wellbeing was inseparable from physical health. He developed a system of 38 essences made from the wildflowers of the English countryside, each one addressing a specific emotional state that all human beings move through at some point in their lives.
Since then, practitioners and researchers around the world have developed their own systems, drawing on the plants native to their own lands and traditions. At The Subtle Garden we work with the Bach remedies as our foundation, and extend into the California FES essences, the Orchids of America, and Saskia's Flower Essences — because different flowers speak to different layers of our being.
-
Flower essences work with the emotional and energetic dimensions of human experience. They may offer support during times of anxiety, fear, grief, loss, or emotional exhaustion. They can be helpful when you feel stuck in a recurring pattern, disconnected from yourself, or in the middle of a transition that feels difficult to navigate.
They are equally relevant in periods of growth and becoming — when you sense something is ready to shift, when you are working toward a goal or desire, or when you simply want to tend your inner life with more care and awareness.
At The Subtle Garden we work with the full range of human seasons, not only the difficult ones.
Flower essences are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any physical or psychological condition. They are not a substitute for medical or psychiatric care.
-
Flower essences are considered vibrational medicine, working on the subtle bioenergetic field rather than the physical body directly. Rather than suppressing what is difficult, they work by creating the conditions in which the positive quality on the other side of a challenging emotional state can surface. They tend rather than override. They accompany rather than direct.
Each essence addresses a specific emotional pattern, and when the right combination is found for a person, something begins to move. Gently, and in its own time.
-
The standard dose is four drops, four times a day, directly on the tongue. Consistency matters more than quantity — the action of flower essences builds over time with regular use. Taking more drops at once does not increase their effectiveness.
In moments of acute distress, the dose may be taken more frequently, as often as once every hour if needed and indicated.
Your formula can also be added to a glass or bottle of water and sipped throughout the day, with each sip counting as a dose.
-
This varies from person to person and depends on what is being worked with. For present-moment states — acute stress, a specific situation, a passing emotional difficulty — shifts can be noticed within days or weeks. For deeper or longer-standing patterns, one to three months of consistent use allows real change to occur.
The effects of flower essences are cumulative. The more consistently they are taken, the more their action builds.
-
Many people notice a gradual settling — a sense of having more access to themselves, more ease with what they were finding difficult, more clarity about what they actually feel or need. Change is often quiet rather than dramatic.
In the first days of taking a new formula, some people notice a temporary increase in emotional awareness and feelings becoming more present before they ease. This is a natural part of the process and passes.
Flower essences work gently and in their own time. They do not force or override. They tend.
-
No. Flower essences are compatible with all medications and healing modalities and do not interfere with their action. They are not intended to replace any medical, psychiatric, or psychological treatment, but may be taken alongside these without concern.
If you have specific questions about your situation, please feel free to get in touch before booking.
-
Yes. All formulas are available in an alcohol-free version, preserved with organic vegetable glycerine instead of brandy. Both versions are equally effective. Please note that glycerine-based formulas have a naturally sweet taste. Select the alcohol-free option when ordering from the shop, or mention it when booking a consultation.
-
Flower essences are generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as they are extremely dilute and contain no measurable amount of the original plant material. If you are pregnant and prefer to avoid alcohol in any amount, our alcohol-free formulas (preserved with organic vegetable glycerine) are a suitable alternative. Please note that glycerine-based formulas have a naturally sweet taste.
We always recommend consulting your midwife or physician if you have any specific concerns.
-
Flower essences are safe for those with pollen or plant allergies. Because they are so dilute, they contain no measurable amount of the original plant material and are therefore not considered allergenic.
-
Store your formula away from direct heat and light. Kept this way, your formula will remain effective for at least two years. When taking your drops, avoid touching the glass dropper to your tongue to keep the bottle clean. If this happens, simply rinse the dropper with clean warm water.
About working
with Sara
-
A consultation is a one-hour conversation, held online in English or Spanish. We explore where you are right now — the emotions, the patterns, the themes that keep returning, the desires or goals that feel ready to be tended. From that conversation, I craft a personalised formula specifically for you and your moment.
One month later we meet again for a check-in, to see what has shifted and adjust if needed. Sometimes one consultation is enough. Sometimes it becomes the beginning of something longer.
-
An accompaniment is a longer process — three, six, or up to twelve months — for those ready to work with deeper or longer-standing patterns. We work together across time, with a new formula each month crafted in response to what the previous one has revealed. The frequency of our sessions is agreed together after your first consultation, based on your needs and rhythm.
This is not a fixed programme. It is a living relationship between you, the plants, and the parts of yourself that are ready to change.
-
We decide this together in your first consultation. You don't need to know in advance. Arrive with whatever you are carrying and we will find the right approach from there.
-
All consultations and accompaniments are currently conducted online, in English or Spanish. This means you can work with me from wherever you are in the world.
-
I work with clients from all over the world. If you are based outside of Spain, I will help you find the most trusted local source to order your formula from, so that wherever you are, you can begin your process without delay. This is something we arrange together after your consultation.
-
Not necessarily, and that is by design. Because every formula is crafted specifically for you and your particular moment, I choose the flowers that are most suited to your needs, drawing from whichever garden or gardens those plants belong to. A formula might draw from one system or from several. What guides the selection is always what is most true and most useful for you, not a fixed method or a predetermined blend.
